A Study on Adolescents¡¯ Servant Leadership

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate adolescents` servant leadership level and their perceptions in regards to servant leadership. For this purpose, both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were applied. In the quantitative phase of the research, 900 students were selected as research subjects using purposive sampling method from general academic high schools and polytechnic high schools in Seoul and Chungcheongnam-do and surveyed using the ¡®Youth Servant Leadership Questionnaire¡¯ modified and supplemented by material from Ihn(2006) based on the ¡®Servant Leadership Scale¡¯ developed by Choi(2005). In addition, 80 students were selected, for the qualitative research phase, using the snowballing sampling method from middle and high schools in Seosan and their self-reports were collected. For the purposes of data analysis, t-test, content-analysis, MANOVA, ANOVA were performed. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1. According to the qualitative research phase, most middle and high school students have an accurate understanding and perception of servant leadership and servant leader. Most of them think that a servant leadership is a necessary characteristic for class leaders. 2. The overall servant leadership level of adolescents, was mostly high. Additionally, the mean of polytechnic high school students` servant leadership was higher than the general academic high school students`. 3. No difference of adolescents` servant leadership according to their sex, age, and home economic status was found in general, but there was a statistically significant difference by academic achievement, and type of high school curriculum. 4. There are interactional effects between the type of high school curriculum and academic achievement and also between the type of high school and home economic status. This study is significant in that it serves as a useful collection of preliminary data, helping the development of adolescents` servant leadership development program by contributing to understanding of adolescents` levels and perceptions of servant leadership.
